On the ”little” island of Ilha de Marajo there are 3 different cities you can go to,which isn’t very much for a island with the size of Switzerland, we decided to go to the smallest one (Joanes) first and check it out. I don’t know if you can actually call it a city, except the main street that was paved all the other looked like this one above (if not worse). Because we took a afternoon ferry from Belem -> Ilha de Marajo we arrived after dark, making it hard to walk around and check different places to stay, therefore we took the only one Lonely Planet suggested.
The location couldn’t be much better, just at the end of the the beach. But being one of the most expensive places I’ve stayed on here in Brazil I asked myself: Was it worth it? I would say no, it wasn’t. The fact that everything was expensive and there was pretty much nothing to do, this place kind of sucked. Of course you could chill on the beach or take a swim, but you always have to be on the watch for stingrays in the water, and that kind of sucks.
Ilha de Marajo is famous for being a island with a lot of birds, I tried getting closer to this white one but it just kept flying away. There was one kind of bird that wasn’t that hard to approach, you could see it pretty much everywhere, even in the cities, this one was feasting on some dead fish.
Water buffalos! It took some time for Till to gather the courage to pass these fellows, and just as the horses in Raposos these guys where walking around just like they owned the place. Maybe they did? What do I know.
